2012 Harley Davidson Superlow Walnut Fuel Tank

2012 Harley Davidson Superlow Walnut Fuel Tank

It has a lot of Chrome to flash and got an attractive walnut fuel tank that can house 17 liters of petrol which is good enough to make you take longer journeys with the fear of running out of fuel. This beautiful fuel tank is hand finished and its beautiful paint job is something that can never go unnoticed, rather it’s something that attracts a lot of attention. To complete the legendry Harley Davidson looks, the cylinders and cylinder heads are coated with silver powder and covered with chrome rocker. Above all its 5.5 lakhs ex-showroom price is mouthwatering and well within reach. I can go on writing on this legendry motorcycle but to sum it up I would say it’s a great package of style, quality, power, cult motorcycling and value for money.

Suzuki Intruder M800

Suzuki Intruder M800

Suzuki Intruder M800

This smaller Intruder M800 is as impressive a looker as the bigger M1800 is. It houses a 2-cylinder, liquid-cooled, SOHC, 45° V-twin 805cc mill that churns out a 53PS of peak power @ 6000rpm and 68.38Nm of peak Torque @ 4000rpm. It has a 5-speed constant mesh transmission and a decent fuel tank capacity of 15.5 liters. It’s a stunner to look at and like the traditional cruiser its low and sports an aggressive stance. It’s a tad longer at 2.5 meters and weighs a good 269 kgs.  Engine is powerful and propels this beast to the speed of 100 km/h in just 8 seconds.

The ride quality is good and given the open roads it’s a delight to ride. It can munch miles with an ease on an open road but maneuvering in the city traffic can be a little bothersome. Seating is comfortable and rider is presented with a good riding posture which allows long rides an easy affair. It got good 130/90 – 16 M/C 67H, front tubeless tires and 170/80 -15 M/C 77H, rear tubeless and coupled with disc brake at the front and drum brake at the rear it gives a lot of confidence on the road.

The Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel injection system is impressive and allows the motorcycle good low to mid rpm throttle.  Features like Idle Speed Control (ISC) system, advanced 32-bit-prosessor Engine Control Module (ECM) and Pulsed AIR (PAIR) injection system makes it amongst the most advanced cruiser in the segment. The thing that goes against this mighty beauty is the price tag of 8.8 lakhs. It’s going to compete with the cruisers that are cheaper than it and the likes of Harley Davidson are even more popular than Intruder. A sharp pricing would have helped. It’s hard to understand the price calculations of Suzuki as Intruder M1800 Limited Edition is prices at 13.75 lakhs and M800 that is a 1000cc smaller in displacement and with some features missing is priced at 8.8 lakhs.

Hyosung ST7

Hyosung ST7

Hyosung ST7

It’s been not so good outing for Hyosung so far in India despite having some good products in hand. ST7 is Hyosung’s offering in the midsize cruiser segment. This is a great looking cruiser with a lot of chrome to flash. But it has to compete with the likes of Harley Davidson Superlow, Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 and the Suzuki Intruder. This makes its job a lot difficult. All these are renowned brands in India and Royal Enfield that’s India’s cult motorcycle enjoys great and massive fan following in the country. Let’s look at what ST7 offers her riders.

ST7 is a stunner to look at. It got the looks that make it hard for you to take your eyes off from the machine. This Korean machine got a lot of chrome and houses a 678.2cc liquid-cooled 90 degree V-Twin DOHS engine that produces 61.7bhp of peak power at 8000rpm and a peak torque of 5.8kgm at 7000rpm. This is a decent power and can help you cruise whole day effortlessly. The engine delivers enough power right in the beginning and you can cruise effortlessly at a top speed of 180kph. To top the things up Garware and Hyosung have launched some beautiful accessories for the ST7 that makes it look great indeed.

But there are some issues that Hyosung has to look into. I found the ride quality a little harsh as compared to the Superlow and the Intruder. The suspension needs to be spruced up a bit to allow the rider a comfortable and smooth ride quality.  It’s a bit difficult to handle it on the bends though on straight rides it’s equally impressive as the Superlow and the Intruder.  The braking needed to be worked on a little to make it more confident inspiring. But if the quality is not at par, it is quiet close to what Superlow and Intruder is offering. To compete with the likes of Harley and Suzuki they need spruce up the quality a bit. Last but not the least it’s priced higher than its competition considering that Hyosung is a lesser known brand in India. Harley Davidson Superlow is priced cheaper that ST7 and this will make selling this cruiser a hard nut to crack for Garware. If they can slash the prices by at least 50k then this can be a interesting option and can give Superlow and Intruder a run for their money

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500

This is our Indian entry to the midsize cruiser segment. I have chosen Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 over the classic 500 because the genuine cruiser like styling and the more comfortable riding position of the Thunderbird. Well I have seen this motorcycle at the Auto Expo 2012 and yes so far none of us have ridden this beauty but I am sure it can give a good competition to the motorcycles above to take the crown of the best midsize cruiser in India. The biggest thing that goes in the favor of Thunderbird 500 is the pricing that is a lot cheaper than the motorcycles listed above. The other thing that goes in the favor is the huge fan following of this genuine Indian cult brand. This iconic brand is been used by bikers around the world for touring for almost a century and have proved its mettle time and again.

Thunderbird supports the same engine that Classic 500 have with same specifications so we all know what that engine is capable of. The ride quality and the comfort I hope will be the same as a Thunderbird Twinspark. But let’s face some realities because the motorcycle is under power and there are issues with the engine refinement as compared to the Harleys and the Suzuki, it’s hard for this Indian cult motorcycle to walk away with the crown.

Verdict

The Suzuki is good in both the looks, handling and the technology but gets beaten on the price front. ST7 is a good looker and a good handler but only on straight roads. The ride quality of ST7 as compared to the Intruder and Superlow is not up to the mark and it’s priced a tad higher than both the motorcycles so this cannot be the winner by any stretch of imagination. Now the Thunderbird 500, my heart wants to offer the crown to this beauty but technologically and ride quality wise it can’t compete with the Superlow and the Intruder. Superlow I believe is the one that is the winner as it comes out a clear winner in all categories the looks, performance and handling, technology and price, but all the above motorcycles are great in their own way.
