Some of the Top Hatchback Cars in India

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki Swift Diesel

The all new Swift is in true sense an all new car. It is loaded with almost 150 new features. In first look it will come across same as the old model but if you look at it for a minute or so you will find that there are many changes in the new Swift. To start with its based on a new platform and Maruti has done pretty well in making it a little longer (90mm longer) and wider (5mm wider) which now offers more space for the passengers and the their luggage thanks to its all new platform. Things would have been a little better had they increased the size of the rear windows to make the passengers feel more airy inside the car.

As soon as you get inside you get the feel of a luxury car. The instrument cluster is top-notch and the overall quality of equipment and the plastic are a treat for the eyes. The controls mounted on the steering wheel are easy to operate and look fabulous. New Swift is powered by the same 1.3 diesel Multi-jet engine that offers a decent but same 74bhp. The cabin is a little quieter now and the handling has been spruce up and is confidence inspiring on the bends. The ride quality is better than the outgoing model in terms of its ability to absorb the jerks and shocks thrown at it by the road. The engine is tuned for the fuel efficiency and the overall ergonomics of the car are spruced up to make it a better package than the outgoing model.

Volkswagen Polo

Polo was an ambitious project for Volkswagen in India and polo has not disappointed the company. It is a car that has given the company a firm footing in the booming hatchback segment and makes Volkswagen an established player in the segment that promises volumes.  Volkswagen Polo is powered by 1.2 common-rail three-cylinder diesel engine that is quiet and efficient but lacks the refinement of a four-cylinder mill. The styling is as a mixture of aggressive and suave looks and company claims the mileage of 22.07/liter that is pretty impressive.

The 1.2 liter diesel engine produces a good 75Ps of Power at 4200 rpms and 180Nm of torque at 2000 rpms. It has a decent turning radius of just 4.97 meters and handles well on the road. The interiors are a little cramped though and the rear seats need some more space. The boot space is good enough to carry the luggage with ease. Ground clearance of 168mm is just right and it can take on the bumpy road very well thanks to its McPherson strut with stabiliser bar at the front and semi-independent trailing arm at the rear. Its galvanized body comes with a 6 years anti-perforation warranty and its green tinted heat absorbing glass keeps the heat out of the cabin quite successfully. Overall it’s a decent package of power, fuel economy and performance.

Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20

The stunning looking fluidic design of the i20 can give many good-looking cars a run for their money. Not the physical beauty of the car, but also the performance and practicality are hard to match. i20 is powered by the 1396cc common rail power plant that generates a good 90 PS of power and a whooping 220Nm of torque that no other hatchback is able to match in India. This power makes it a drug to drive, its sheer power makes you addictive to the wheel.  It has got big 14 inch alloy wheels that match the power of the car with great road grip and handling.

Looks wise there is no difference in the petrol and diesel version. The interiors, exteriors and the features are the same. i20 is a car to reckon with in the hatchback segment and in many aspects better than the competition and that’s the reason it’s one of the highest selling hatch in the country. It also offers the most number of options in the hatchback category.

Skoda Fabia

Skoda Fabia 1.2L TDI (Diesel)

Skoda Fabia is a great looking car and offers decent on road performance. It has an 1199cc diesel motor that churns out 75BHP of peak power at 4200rpm and a peak torque of 180NM at 2000rpm. The engine is quite good but lacks the refinement of i20 and Swift. It got a very good ride quality and can be a good choice for long drives. The gear-shift  is smooth as silk and you need a minimalistic effort to change gears in traffic conditions. The interiors are top-notch. The upholstery and the plastics are of top quality and are beautifully crafted. The best part about it is the aggressive pricing. Skoda has slashed the prices recently and had made this hatch a good value for money.

But there is a serious issue with the Turbo lag as it kicks in only after 2000 rpms only. This is one thing that troubled me in traffic conditions and hilly areas. The turning radius is more than other hatchback in the segment and there is no climate control in the car though the AC is powerful. The boot space of 315 liters is great and if you roll the back seats then you will have a whooping 1180liters of boot space. The top end suspension system makes the drives comfortable and devours all the jerks with an ease.  Company claims a mileage of 14 Kmpl in city driving conditions and 19 Kmpl on highways. Overall it’s a good package but had to complete with the likes of the Swift and i20.

Toyota Liva

Toyota Liva Diesel

You can trust a Toyota product with closed eyes and same is the case with the Etios Liva diesel. The Hatch comes with a 1.4 litre D-4D Common Rail Diesel Engine that churns out a peak power of 68PS at 3800 rpm and a peak torque of 170NM at 1800-2400 rpm. Toyota’s has previously used the same D-4D technology, in their other offerings like Innova, Corolla Altis, Fortuner, Prado and LC 200 has earned acclaim for it. Their D-4D technology is known for its refinement and highly reliable performance.

The simple but pleasant looks of the car are refreshing and gives the hatch better styling and aerodynamics. The interiors are two toned and the seats are very comfortable. Cabin space is good and makes the interiors airy. The decent 251 liters of boot space can carry your luggage with an ease. The interiors are also very practically designed and have many spaces to hold your bottles, mobile, cups. The car is equipped with all the safety features like the energy absorbing body shell, driver and passenger air bags, ABS with EBD. It’s a great package and a car that you can depend on for many years to come.
